This procedure in nitrogen donating atmosphere with carbon supplement (through CO2-admixture) and at a slightly higher temperature than gas nitriding produces a faster growth of the compound layer at lower NHDs. Mixed Phases of precipitated nitrides and carbides create an excellent protection against wear and emergency operating funcionality. Also, corrosive attacks to the metal surface is strongly decelerated. The low process temperature prevents distortion and crack formation that may occur during quenching processes.
Through a subsequent oxidazation in air, water or oil, corrosion resistance can further increase. The NHD usually amounts 0,1-0,5mm. Oxidization ist not only for nitrocarburization, but possible after many other processes. Partial treatments through protection of areas/insulation is possible for all nitriding processes (gas and plasma). Important for all Nitrocarburization processes: The treatment is applied to create the compound layer, the diffusion layer is of minor importance.
