Many sectors of modern technology would be unthinkable without the application of hardening procedures. There are hardly any important mechanical parts and construction elements which are not hardened or tempered today. There are good reasons for this: due to the thermal treatment, workpieces are produced with very high strength. This means that they can withstand higher loads and also be constructed as more lightweight and compact components with a much longer lifetime.
