An alternative to salt-bath nitride hardening
  Nitride hardening with synthetic gases
As an alternative to salt-bath nitride hardening, the Reese Hardening Plants and Messer Griesheim GmbH have developed the VARIO-Nitro-CARB-technique - an ecologically safe nitrocarburization procedure, in which pure synthetic gases are used.

The new nitriding method yields application-related properties comparable to those obtained with salt-bath nitriding. The hardening process and the layer formation are also comparable; since CO2 is used as an added gas, carbon is introduced into the nitrided case as well.

In comparison, however, the VARIO-Nitro-CARB-process is considerably easier to regulate. Through the use of added gases the nitride atmosphere can within broad limits be adapted to the intended field of application. This new nitriding method, which is characterized by good reproducibility and high operational reliability, has been successfully employed by the Bochum Hardening Plant for several months now. Especially suited for this purpose are all low- and medium-alloy steels.
